This book presents the deterministic view of quantum mechanics developed by Nobel Laureate Gerard 't Hooft. Dissatisfied with the uncomfortable gaps in the way conventional quantum mechanics meshes with the classical world, 't Hooft has revived the old hidden variable ideas, but now in a much more systematic way than usual. In this, quantum mechanics is viewed as a tool rather than a theory. The book presents examples of models that are classical in essence, but can be analysed by (...) the use of quantum techniques, and argues that even the Standard Model, together with gravitational interactions, might be viewed as a quantum mechanical approach to analysing a system that could be classical at its core. He shows how this approach, even though it is based on hidden variables, can be plausibly reconciled with Bell's theorem, and how the usual objections voiced against the idea of 'superdeterminism' can be overcome, at least in principle. This framework elegantly explains - and automatically cures - the problems of the wave function collapse and the measurement problem. Even the existence of an "arrow of time" can perhaps be explained in a more elegant way than usual. As well as reviewing the author's earlier work in the field, the book also contains many new observations and calculations. The history of the concept of “religion” in Western tradition has intrigued scholars for years. This important collection of eighteen essays brings further light to the ongoing debate. This paper describes a novel perspective on the foundations of mathematics: how mathematics may be seen to be largely about “information compression via the matching and unification of patterns”. That is itself a novel approach to IC, couched in terms of nonmathematical primitives, as is necessary in any investigation of the foundations of mathematics. This new perspective on the foundations of mathematics reflects the facts that mathematics is almost exclusively the product of human brains, and has been developed, as an (...) aid to human thinking, mathematics is likely to be consonant with much evidence for the importance of IC in human learning, perception, and cognition. This perspective on the foundations of mathematics has grown out of a long-term programme of research developing the SP Theory of Intelligence and its realization in the SP Computer Model, a system in which a generalised version of ICMUP—the powerful concept of SP-multiple-alignment—plays a central role. This paper shows with an example how mathematics, without any special provision, may achieve compression of information. Then, it describes examples showing how variants of ICMUP may be seen in widely used structures and operations in mathematics. Examples are also given to show how several aspects of the mathematics-related disciplines of logic and computing may be understood as ICMUP. Also discussed is the intimate relation between IC and concepts of probability, with arguments that there are advantages in approaching AI, cognitive science, and concepts of probability via ICMUP. Also discussed is how the close relation between IC and concepts of probability relates to the established view that some parts of mathematics are intrinsically probabilistic, and how that latter view may be reconciled with the all-or-nothing, “exact,” forms of calculation or inference that are familiar in mathematics and logic. This essay explores how it might be possible to recover a more pluralistic and therefore participatory understanding and exercise of the teaching office in the Christian Church by, first, briefly reflecting upon the historical backdrop to the emergence and development of the role of authoritative ecclesial teacher. Second, I identify some of the ecclesial fault lines and tensions that emerged in the modern and contemporary periods pertaining to teaching authority. Third, I raise the issue of the impact of such developments (...) upon the manner in which Christian churches have sought to offer teachings on ethical issues in recent times. Fourth, I explore, via an ecclesiological analysis that is both a comparative and ecumenical in nature, three visions for retrieving a more participatory and life-giving understanding of the teaching office and practice of the teaching function for our times. The visions explored come from a Reformed, Roman Catholic, and ecumenical standpoint: respectively, those of Richard Robert Osmer, Richard R. Gaillardetz, and Willem Visser 't Hooft. The final section offers some brief conclusions about the potential for truly ecumenical collaboration in moral discernment in the light of such considerations. (shrink)

Une philosophie originale, le pragmatisme, est bien née aux Etats-Unis au tournant du siècle. Elle n'était pas la première. Elle avait été précédée du transcendantalisme, version romantique du kantisme, qui en était la promesse. Le positivisme logique et la philosophie analytique d'origine européenne furent bien reçus aux Etats-Unis avant et après la seconde Guerre Mondiale, mais devinrent très vite " pragmatistes ", au point de donner aujourd'hui naissance à un nouveau pragmatisme, oublieux parfois peut-être de ses origines. L'accueil fait au (...) pragmatisme en Europe nous amène à poser la question du caractère américain du pragmatisme. Ne serait-il pas plutôt la nouvelle philosophie universelle? Universelle, parce que, expérimentale et démocratique, elle s'est substituée à l'impérialisme d'une réalité et d'une vérité supposées absolues, d'une métaphysique et d'une éthique imposées par le pouvoir, qu'il fût d'Etat ou d'Eglise? Universelle, parce qu'elle est porteuse d'espoir et qu'elle fournit les moyens intellectuel et matériel de le réaliser? (shrink)

Elle préfigure l’inversion de l’intentionnalité pratiquée dans Totalité et Infini et désintrique le lien temps-monde-corps, hérité de Husserl, en le renouant autour d’Eros. Ce texte questionne cette « centralité du sexe », si saisissante dans les Carnets, et engage une réflexion sur l’équivoque temporelle qui règle non seulement l’érotique de Levinas mais sans doute (...) aussi son éthique, en tant que l’une et l’autre sont temporellement structurées autour de l’unicité de l’autre et de l’unicité du soi devant l’autre. Là où, pour Hegel, la négation se nie et l’aliénation s’aliène, le sans vient inciser chirurgicalement la texture même de la langue spéculative, laquelle assure continûment la « reprise dans le concept ». La différance consigne ainsi l’impossibilité de la guérison dialectique et de l’accomplissement salutaire où s’annuleraient le différemment, l’attente, la non-venue. Cette contribution fait le point sur ce qui, de Schelling, a pu s’infiltrer dans la Recherche du temps perdu, via Gabriel Séailles, et en particulier son Essai sur le génie dans l’art que Proust avait lu attentivement. Elle éclaire les deux versants de cette possible médiation, d’une part quant au rapport entre l’Essai et la philosophie schellingienne ; d‘autre part, quant au rapport entre l’Essai et ce qui s’en diffuse dans Proust, en particulier dans Le Temps retrouvé. L’enquête montre que (...) si Séailles a lu le Schelling de son temps, le philosophe transcendantal de l’Identité et de l’art ; et que si Proust a lu Séailles, il ne s’en suit nullement que Proust fût « schellingien ». Entre Schelling, celui de la philosophie médiane et tardive, et Proust – une rencontre a lieu qui n’est pas de l’ordre d’une influence attestable, mais d’une affinité profonde autour de thèmes aussi décisifs que la sensation, l’involontaire, le réel et le temps. La philosophie politique, dans sa tradition dominante, prend essentiellement en vue la possibilité d’une continuité plus ou moins harmonieuse entre personne et société, entre individu et communauté – que ce soit dans la figure du contrat, de l’association, du transfert de forces ou dans celle de l’universalité concrète de l’État. La pensée du politique autorisée par l’éthique de Levinas frappe de discontinuité les formes et les instances d’homogénéisation ou de dialectisation qui découlent de ce modèle. Elle propose une pensée de (...) l’altérité comme interruption radicale mais fragile des totalisations et des autonomisations de la politique. Dans le contraste entre visage et personne, entre proximité duelle et multiplicité des tiers, dans l’équivoque même de la personne, dans l’inspiration de la société et de la politique par ce qui vient avant elles, une pensée de la Justice s’esquisse, originale et profonde.
